Vows to Make Affordable Health Care A Priority

Boston – The 62,000 member strong Retired State, County and Municipal Employees Association “Mass Retirees” has endorsed Maura Healey for Attorney General.

The Association cites Healey’s public service background and, specifically, her work on health care issues as the reason for the endorsement.

“Like many of our members, Maura Healey is a dedicated public servant. She’s spent her career tackling issues that directly impact the day-to-day lives of not only public retirees, but of the wider community as a whole,” said Association President Frank Valeri. “We’ve also been very impressed by her as a first-time candidate for elected office. Maura’s worked hard visiting every nook and cranny of the state, personally meeting voters and making her case. It’s obvious to us that she’s running for all of the right reasons.

“However, the issue of most importance to public retirees is the continued access to high quality affordable health care in Massachusetts. The Attorney General plays a central role in the oversight of hospitals, insurers and all medical providers. We believe that Maura Healey is best equipped and most experienced to represent the interests of all retirees in this regard.”

In recent years, Mass Retirees has voiced its rising concern over the consolidation of Massachusetts health care providers into “for profit” businesses, as well as large conglomerates.

“I’m honored to have the support of the Mass Retirees,” said Healey. “The 62,000 members of this community have dedicated their lives to improving our state. As Attorney General, I will take on predatory companies that target our seniors and work to ensure that our communities are livable and accessible for all our residents. With an aging demographic and rising health care costs, we need an Attorney General who continues to work on quality affordable health care in every part of our state. I look forward to partnering with the Mass Retirees on this important work.”

The Attorney General is also responsible for appointing a designee to the three-member Contributory Retirement Appeals Board (CRAB), which serves as the final administrative law panel for retirement law disputes.

“We believe Maura Healey will be the type Attorney General who fights for retirees when it comes to overseeing the healthcare marketplace, as well as appointing a qualified designee to CRAB. We believe her impressive record speaks for itself,” continued Valeri.
