NOVEMBER 26, 2012: It was a busy Thanksgiving weekend for the staff of the State Board of Retirement who were engaged in the process of moving to their new home at 1 Winter Street in downtown Boston.

The long awaited move from the McCormack Building adjacent to the State House doubles the badly needed amount of space to efficiently run the State Board’s professional operation.
Old timers will recall that the Board had originally been quartered within the State House. Those were the days when legislators, outside of the leadership, had no offices or telephones of their own.

Eventually, the Board was told to look elsewhere, resulting in a move to a commercial building on Tremont Street across from the Parker House.
With the construction of the McCormack Building some 40 years ago, the State Board of Retirement along with the Teachers’ Board and the Group Insurance Commission were given space in the new building.

As the McCormack eventually became overly crowded, the Teachers’ Board and GIC moved to more spacious quarters, leaving the State Board well behind in modernization and ability to function with maximum efficiency.

The State Board’s new location is on the eighth floor of a building located at the corner of Washington and Winter Streets across from Macy’s Department Store. One Winter Street is a two-minute walk from either the Washington Street or Park Street T stations.

As the Board’s staff adjusts to its new home we congratulate them on this opportunity to better serve the members of the State Retirement System.
